Ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH): combining the processability of ethylene polymer with the barrier effect of ethylene alcohol polymer, ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer not only shows excellent processing performance but also shows an excellent blocking effect on gases, odors, fragrances, solvents, etc. Due to its thermal stability when combined with ethylene, multilayer containers containing EVOH barrier layers can be completely reused. These features enable plastic containers containing EVOH barrier layers to replace many glass and metal containers in food packaging.
Soarnol™ is an ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer developed by Mitsubishi Chemical’s own technology.It has high gas barrier properties, oil resistance and high transparency derived from vinyl alcohol structure as well as moisture resistance and extrudablity comes from ethylene unit.Additionally, Soarnol is consist of carbon, oxygen and hydrogen so no harmful gases is generated when incineration and its combustion heat is a half of polyethylene.
Soarnol™ EVOH is a ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer resin developed by Mitsubishi using a unique manufacturing process. It exhibits high gas barrier properties, oil resistance, and transparency attributed to the vinyl alcohol component, while also possessing moisture resistance, melt extrusion capability, and injection molding characteristics associated with the ethylene component. Since Soarnol™ is composed of carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen, it does not release toxic gases when incinerated, and the heat generated during combustion is only half that of polyethylene, making it a low-impact material.
Soarnol™ EVOH is widely used for applications requiring chemical resistance, solvent barrier properties, and durability, such as automotive fuel tanks, gasoline pipelines, and underfloor heating pipes. It also finds applications in agriculture, where its high transparency, moisture absorption, non-static characteristics, and chemical resistance make it suitable for agricultural film and other uses. Additionally, due to its excellent gas barrier properties, Soarnol™ EVOH is used in food and medical packaging. It is also utilized for its aroma retention properties and high transparency in applications like juice cartons, toothpaste tubes, cosmetic bottles, and edible oil containers.

Soarnol™ V, VH series are focused due to a request for longer shelf life to reduce food loss.Soarnol™ V, VJ series has 2~3000 time higher gas barrier property than that of polyamide (PA). For example, by substituting PA monolayer food packaging by Soarnol™ V, VH series, large amount of plastic consumption reduction is possible while keeping same level of gas barrier property.

Flex crack resistance grades SF series
In the past, EVOH materials had the drawback of being too rigid and unsuitable for applications requiring intense bending. This issue has been addressed through the development of the Soarnol™ EVOH SF series, which offers excellent flexibility surpassing that of conventional EVOH materials. We conducted evaluations on the oxygen permeability of multi-layer films after repeated bending. Standard EVOH materials exhibit a significant decrease in gas barrier properties after hundreds of bends, whereas the Soarnol™ EVOH SF series maintains high gas barrier performance even after more than 500 bends.
